HOW WE DESIGNED THIS WOODFORD BASEMENT INTO AN INNOVATIVE LIVING AND ENTERTAINING SPACE

These most recent clients of ours in Woodford were a lovely family who asked us to renovate and refresh the basement of their detached 5-bedroom into an additional living and entertainment space. The space works cohesively and multi functionally as our clients wanted to incorporate a kitchen, living and gym space whilst accomplishing a consistent design throughout. The clients also wanted the space to have an indoor-outdoor feel to it with large sliding doors, allowing them to indulge through the warm summer months. We replaced the old flooring with a tasteful new limewash chevron flooring throughout and a fresh sophisticated colour palette. We introduced a beautiful warm grey with lavender undertones from Lick Paint as the general wall paint and a dazzling revival of terracotta with Elle Decors cushions craze as a feature paint. Alongside charmingly bold accent furnishings and a slight contrast of raw materials and soft textures.

FAMILY ROOM

This 46sqm space is the main entertainment area of the basement as our clients wanted the room to have a relaxed living area where they can mingle with friends and family or watch television on a quiet evening. Additionally, the clients wanted to include a kitchen into the design to allow themselves and guests to enjoy appetisers or a summers barbecue. We installed an integrated one wall JLH kitchen with an overhead shelf to keep the space organic and not too compiled as the clients did not need a large amount of storage and appliance space. The kitchen consisted of a sink, tap, integrated bin and an under-counter fridge/freezer with plenty of lower cabinet storage space for pots and pans as well as the overhead shelf for glasses and plates. Incorporated within this kitchen design we included a little bench seat with underneath storage which allows clients and guests to sit down when one may be making food and in conversation. We wanted the overall look of the kitchen to have a sophisticated yet elegant feel. To accomplish this look we opted for a lovely soft green from JLH called malthouse for the kitchen cabinet handless doors with a stunning elegant marble effect primorida worktop and a JLH walnut for the overhead shelf. The combined materials and finishes worked cohesively well together complimenting the fresh chevron flooring.

As we moved on to designing the living space, we created a large media unit for the television wall as it was the perfect space for a media wall, and to include more storage space. We designed a bespoke 6 drawer unit fitting into the space perfectly with a tall open and closed installed shelving unit. Keeping the design consistent throughout, we went with the same primorida worktop as the kitchen, JLH putty push to open cabinets and warm walnut shelving. This allowed the design to flow within the space, complementing the finishes. When choosing furniture as we had a spacious space to work with, we went for an L shape Modena lounging unit sofa from Bo-Concept which fitted comfortably into the space and really gave the relaxed feel we wanted. We chose a light grey soft woven polyester material called frisco for the sofa material as this kept a soft balance in colours. Alongside the sofa we paired two bold accent armchairs, the charmy velvet golden armchair from Amara and the ravishing Lovett chair from Soho home. These added the perfect amount of depth to the design as the rich colours complimented each other exquisitely bringing in a luxurious feel and really unify the design as a whole. To complete the seating area, we went for a circular earth black metal tray coffee table as this brought a lovely organic symmetry to the space and added in that extra depth. Paired with a charming green marble side table from Zara Home which flattered the rich colours of the armchairs. Finally, we tastefully styled the space with cushions, throws, décor pieces and plants establishing a simplistic balance to prevent overcrowding.

GYM

When designing the gym, we had to think rationally as the space was 19sqm and our clients wanted a variety of gym equipment within the space therefore we had to consider the layout and functionality of the space.  We wanted to achieve dividing the two spaces with a feature that still kept the overall design cohesive, to accomplish this idea we installed these outstanding glazed crittall doors which brought in such a stylish statement feature to the space. As our clients will be working out and potentially doing mat work or yoga within the space, we decided to go for a dynamic series rubber mat black roll for the flooring. This was the most suitable and functional option for a home gym as we had to consider damage proof flooring when putting in and moving around heavyweight gym equipment. To keep the consistency between the two spaces we used the warm grey general wall paint with deep powdery cocoa by Elle Décor called tailored as a feature paint to bring in some warmth and depth to the space.

THE FINAL LOOK

The overall result of the design is a luxurious trendy and sophisticated living and entertaining basement space with a fresh colour scheme and bold revival features that act as focal points within the space. The fundamental point for this project was to achieve a multifunctional space that was tenaciously cohesive throughout whilst allowing individual pieces to have a prominent presence.
